» Kidonk, Asansyon-an montre nou an plen glwa ke rezirèksyon-an genyen, ki se pataje laglwa Bondye etènèlman, yon avangou de plan Bondye pou nou tout si la yo ki tap swiv li fidelman. Asansyon-an di nou tou ke Kris la toujou avèk nou. Jan li te di nan Evanjil sèmèn pase-a, « Mwen pap kite nou òfelen. M-ap vini jwenn nou … tè sa-a pap wè-m ankò, men nou menm, n-ap wè-m. » Pou fini, Asansyon-an fè nou konprann ke nou gen yon jòb pou nou fè. No, mete-nou sou travay, lòt moun yo bezwen konnen grandè ak profondè zèv Bondye yo nan lavi nou. Nou bezwen pote Bondye, nan lekòl nou, nan travay nou, nan mitan fanmi nou. Mond lan gen anpil kesyon pou nou. Anpil nan kesyon sa gen anpil profondè. Wi, normalman, Jezi se repons lan. Men, pou konprann Jezi, vle di nou dwe aprann lafwa nou e pote konesans nou bay lòt yo.

My brothers and sisters,

Saint Luke in the Acts of the Apostles tells us that Jesus after his death and resurrection appeared to the Apostles over a period of forty days and then ascended into heaven. In the Bible “forty” does not designate a mathematical sum. It is not to be taken literally. That would be reading the Bible as if it were contemporary literature. The number “forty” throughout the Bible does not refer to a specific numerical value. We ourselves may say that something happened two or three years ago, by which we mean an indefinite time. “Forty” in the Bible is something like that. More importantly “forty” in the Bible indicates a period of time in which God accomplishes his work. Thus, the Solemnity of the Ascension calls us to celebrate the truth that Jesus, after his death and resurrection, faithfully completed his mission on this earth and prepared the Church for the great event of Pentecost. The point is that when Jesus rose from the dead, he did not return to the form of life which he had lived on this earth from the moment of his conception in Mary’s womb until his death on the cross. Jesus rose from the dead as Lord and Christ, the Savior of the world and the Head of his mystical body, the Church. His was now a glorified life. That the theological meaning of our statement in the Creed: “He rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father.” So, the Ascension shows us the full glory of the resurrection, sharing in God’s glory eternally, a preview of God’s plan for all the rest of us who have followed Christ faithfully. The Ascension also tells us that Christ is still with us. As he said in the gospel last week, “I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you… the world will no longer see me, but you will see me.” Finally, the Ascension tells us we have a job to do. We can’t spend all our days staring up to the heavens wondering where he’s gone, or what he is doing, or what heaven will be like for us. “Men and women of Galilee, why are you looking up… The angel said in the first reading “don’t look in the sky” and stop contemplating your navel. No, get to work. Others need to know about the heights and depths of God’s working in our lives. We need to take God to schools, to the work places, to our families. The world has questions. Some of these questions are profound. Yes, ultimately, Jesus is the answer. But to understand Jesus means that we have to learn our faith and bring our knowledge to others.

Men, depi yon moun genyen-l krentif, e depi-l fè sa-k korèk, Bondye kontan avè-l, kelkeswa peyi kote moun lan sòti. » Finalman, Pyè te vin konprann kisa Bondye te di-l nan vizyon konsa li pa ekzije payen yo sikonsi oubyen aksepte tradisyon ak koutim Jwif yo. Li òdone tout moun pou yo batize. Sen Jan, nan Lekti li-a, jodi-a ajoute, li di : « Tout moun ki gen renmen nan yo, soti nan Bondye.» Nou konnen trèbyen ke vrè lanmou-an manifeste-l plis nan sa n-ap fè ke nan sa n-ap di. Men mwen sèten nou konn wè yon seri de sitiyasyon kote-w kon jwenn madanm ak mari oubyen paran konn fè anpil bagay pou fanmi-lan, men ki pa janm gen tan pou yo fè ti pataj ansanm. Mwen wè anpil maryaj ki kraze poutèt rezon sa-a. Yo reyalize yon seri de projè ansanm pou fanmi-an, men yo pa janm gen tan pou yo fè ti pale ansanm, fè ti pataj ansanm. Kòm n-ap selebre Fèt Manman, youn nan kado presye ke nou kapab jwen nan yo, se lanmou; manman se vrèman yon egzanp lanmou Bondye gen pou nou. Nou di lè na-p resite Kredo-a, nan Lamès la: « NOu kwè nan yon sèl Bondye. » Paske genyen yon sèl Bondye, Nou fòme yon sèl pèp. Kòm yon sèl grenn Bondye nou-an pa egzante pèsonn nan lanmou li, kidonk, nou menm tou nou pa dwe ekskli pèsonn sou baz ras li, koulè li, nasyonalite li, religyon li, ou byen sou baz nenpòt bagay ki ka separe moun. An patikilye, antan ke Katolik, nou profese ke Legliz nou-an inivèsèl ki se siyifikasyon literal mo Katolik la. »

My brothers and sisters,

IBM has adopted a new motto which concludes most of its advertising on TV and in magazines. That motto is: “Solutions for a Small Planet.” The meaning seems to be that modern communications have in a sense shrunk the globe so that our planet has become smaller. People on one side of the earth can easily and quickly be in communication with people on the opposite side. Long before IBM came into being, God the Father had a plan to bring people together, no matter what part of the planet they happened to inhabit. He sent his Son to be the link, the binding force of the entire human race. The liturgy for today wants to get right to the point: that God’s love in Jesus is meant for all people. After meeting Cornelius and seeing his faith, Peter exclaimed: “I begin to see how true it is that God shows no partiality. Rather, the person of any nation who fears God and acts uprightly is acceptable to him.” Peter had finally understood what God had told him in his vision and without requiring these pagans to be circumcised or requiring them to accept Jewish traditions and customs; he ordered them all to be baptized. Saint John in his letter today adds: “Everyone who loves is begotten of God.” We know of course that real love shows itself more by what we do, than by what we say. But I am sure we’ve seen situations where spouses or parents did lots of things for the family, but never had time to share themselves. I’ve known many marriages that broke up just for that reason. They did things for each other but they never had time just to be with each other and share themselves with each other. As we celebrate Mother’s Day, one precious gift we can get from them is love; mothers are really example of God’s love for us. We say in our profession of faith during Mass: “We believe in one God.” Because there is only one God, we are all actually one people. As our one true God excludes no one from his love, so we too must never exclude anyone on the basis of race, color, nationality, religion, or any other element which tends to separate people. In particular as Catholics, we profess that our Church is universal, such being the literal meaning of Catholic. There is only one God and Father of us all. We must be most conscientious about overcoming the hatred and division which is part of secular society. The solution for our planet, large or small, is to share the love of Christ with everyone. Mothers show that well, so, it is fitting to say to all of you: “Happy Mother’s Day!

Fr. Yves

Lè kretyen yo ap priye Sòm 23, yo toujou panse ak Jezi, menm lè Sòm lanse o sijè de Bondye Papa-a li ye. Laverite nan dikton: « Tèl Pè, tèlFis » li aplike nan ka sa-a. si n-al pi lwen nan doktrin Trinite nou-an,nou wè ke Bondye Papa-a, Bon Bèje ki la pou tout tan-an, ak Pitit li ki te viniviv pami nou sou tè kòm imaj Papa li, yo lye atravè yon espri damou profon kiLespri Sen-an, ki se lyen inyon yo epi ki se ekspresyon devosyon yo youn ak lòt.Sependan, pou dirije ak mennen pèp Legliz la, Kris la ban nou beje yo, ke nourele « Pastè », ki se sinifikasyon nan lang Latin-an pou Beje.Dimanch sa-a, ki se dimanch Bon Bèje, Pap la konsakre jounen sa-a kòm jounenmondyal lapriyè pou moun ki gen vokasyon pou vin pe`. Nou dwe priye pou nou kagenyen prèt ki bon epi ki fidèl, sitou pou kounyè-a kote anpil katolik choke epipèdi konfyans sou konpòtman kèk prèt. Men nou pa dwe priye sèlman, nou dwe fèplis toujou. Nou dwe vin yon seri bon troupo ki merite bon pastè. Nou tout nou konn pa kontan le` chak fwa prèt yo trayi vokasyon yo epi vyole konfyans nou mete nan yo.Men an nou panse a pe` odine` yo ki bay tout yo menm pa gras Granmet la pou yo viv epi aji an akò ak vokasyon yo antan ke prèt. Prèt sa yobezwen moun k-ap fè tout efò yo pou yo viv ak aji an ako` a vokasyon yo antanke Katolik. Dènye vèsè Evanjil jodi-a seyon vèsè ki enpòtan anpil e ki kapab ede mete Jezi nan sant lavi nou. Jezi di :« Se pou sa ke Papa-m renmen-m, paske mwen bay lavi mwen pou-m ka reprann li.Pèsonn pa pran lavi-m, se mwen ki bay pròp tèt mwen. » Konsa, lè moun yomande poukisa Jezi pat anpeche mal rive moun ki fidèl a li, petèt yon repons te kapab lavi sou tè sa-a pa vrèman kote ke lavi anabondans lan ye. Menm lè nou gen bote, popilarite, sante, richès, jenès,sajès epi tout sa ke kè nou ta anvi, nou pa gen tout bagay vre. Nou toujousanti kè nou vid, nou pa janm vrèman totalman satisfè , paske kè nou fèt poulinyon pafè avèk Bondye e nou pa kònnen koman li ye ke lòske nou rive nan syèl la.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER, B

My brothers and sisters,

One of the most endearing, as well as enduring, images of Jesus is that of the Good Shepherd. It was and remains a favorite of Christian artists going back as far as the time of the catacombs in Rome. Even though we do not see real sheep and shepherds very often, still the image of the good shepherd is one of the most comforting images in the Scriptures. When Christians pray Psalm 23, the Good Shepherd psalm, they almost always think of Jesus, even though the psalm is really about God the Father. The truth of our saying, “Like father, like son,” applies in this instance. Going a step further in our doctrine of the Trinity, we see that God the Father, the eternal Good Shepherd, and his Son who came into our world as the living image of his Father, are imbued with a spirit of love, the Holy Spirit, who is the bond of their union and the expression of their devotion to one another. Yet, to lead and inspire the people of his Church, Christ has given us shepherds whom we call “pastors”, the Latin word for shepherd. This Sunday, Good Shepherd Sunday, the Pope has designated as world day of prayer for vocations to the priesthood. Pray we must for good, faithful priests, especially now when many Catholics are shocked and disillusioned by the scandalous behavior of some priests. But we must do even more than pray. We must become flocks who are worthy of good shepherds. All of us are disappointed when priests betray their calling and violate the trust which people place in them. But let’s think about the ordinary, good priests who are trying their best with God’s grace to live and act in accord with their vocation as priests. Such priests need people who are trying their best to live and act in accord with their vocation as Catholics. The last verse in today’s gospel is a very important verse which can help us make Jesus the central part of our lives. Jesus said “This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own”. So, when people ask why Jesus doesn’t keep bad things from happening to those who are faithful to him, perhaps one answer could be that life in this world is not where the abundant life really is. Even, if we have looks, popularity, health, wealth, youth, wisdom and everything else our hearts desire, we don’t “have it all”. We will always feel some emptiness in our hearts, we’ll never be totally satisfied, because our hearts were made for perfect union with God, and we don’t know what that’s like until we get to heaven.

Frè m ak Sè m yo,
Tan-an se yon reyalite ke moun paka sezi. konsèp entrigan”Back to the Future” te ase kaptivan pou pwodwi 3 Fim ki gen non sa-a. Nou kapab mache nan lalin, nou kapab eksplore yon atom. Nou gen zam ki pisan anpil ki kab koze gro destriksyon. Men, kilès ki janm dekouvri kòman pou kraze pouvwa lanmò kote tout bagay ki vivan dwe tonbe devan-l? Rezireksyon Jezi se pi gro mèvèy ki k-ap ekziste ke mond lan janm konnen. Depi lè moun te konn viv nan trou, ak tout envansyon nou yo, tout pouvwa nou yo melanje ansanm pa kapab egale glwa rezirèksyon Kris la ki vin antre nan listwa mond nou-an pou lavi ki pap janm fini-an. Rezirèksyon-an pa selebre sèlman laglwa Jezi, men pròp fiti glwa nou tou si n-ap ouvri lespri nou ak kè nou ba li. Lè n-ap mache devan Lotèl la pou nou vin rsevwa kò Jezi Kri, nou dwe fè-l ak lafwa ke nou ap avanse nan yon fiti gloriye kote nou pral pataje total kapital nan rezireksyon Kris la.

My brothers and sisters,

Time is an elusive reality. The intriguing concept of “Back to the Future” was fascinating enough to produce three movies of that name. Even more fascinating is the truth of our faith about the future. It will be glorious. That is to say the Easter season is a time for looking back to the past but always with an eye on the future. During this season we celebrate the great events of our salvation through the Pascal Mystery of the death and resurrection of Christ. That is the past. But our salvation will not be complete until we rise with Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit to everlasting glory in the home of our heavenly Father. That is our glorious future. When the disciples saw the Risen Lord, “they were incredulous for sheer joy and wonder.” Later Peter was able to proclaim to the people: “You put to death the Author of life but God raised him from the dead and we are his witnesses.” My brothers and sisters, human beings have invented all kinds of marvelous things. There are great discoveries in medicine that can add years to people’s lives. There are wonderful inventions that can make life much more comfortable and enjoyable. We can walk on the moon and we can explore the atom. We have powerful weapons that can cause untold destruction. But who has ever discovered how to overcome the power of death which every living thing must eventually succumb to? The Resurrection of Jesus is the most fantastic event that this world could ever know. Since the days when human beings lived in caves, all our inventions, all our discoveries, all our power added together cannot begin to equal the glory of Christ’s resurrection that introduced into our world and our history new and eternal life. The resurrection celebrated not just Jesus’ glory but our own future glory if we will open our minds and hearts to him. When we will walk toward the altar to receive the Eucharist, we ought to do so with the faith that we are moving onward toward a glorious future when we will share fully in the resurrection of Christ.

Frè m ak Sè m yo,

Youn nan aspè nan Levanjil dimanch sa-a tèlman pwisan, ke li pase kòm yon ekspresyon nan langaj nou. Premye Lekti-a, jodi-a enfòme nou ke yo te “konsakre tèt yo nan koute predikasyon apot yo, nan lavi an komen, nan kase pen an ak lapriyè.” Nou suiv egzanp yo-a. Nan lonè evènman sa-a, nou vle ofri kek fraz ke Jan Pòl II te itilize nan premye predikasyon li lè li te fèk Pap, ke lil te bay nan jou inogirasyon li, 22 oktòb 1978. Li konn fè kèk dout, yon dout ki konn tounen an dezespwa. Nou mande-w, poutèt sa, nou sipliye-w ak imilite ak konfyans, kite Kris la pale ak moun. Se li sèl ki gen mo lavi-a, wi, lavi ki p’ap janm fini-an. Pase yon Bon Dimanch kè sansib Bondye!

My brothers and sisters,

One aspect of this Sunday’s Gospel is so powerful that it has given an expression to our language. Everyone knows what it means to say that a person is a “doubting Thomas.” Thomas the Apostle insisted on seeing the Lord Jesus before he would give up his doubt that Jesus truly had been raised from the dead. Thomas may have had a good excuse for not being at church that eventful Sunday. Whatever the problem was, he corrected it the following Sunday. He was with the disciples, the assembly of the Church. Jesus revealed himself to Thomas because Thomas had once again joined his spiritual brothers and sisters. These men and women, the first to believe in Christ, were instructed that they were a new people, the family of God “who in his great mercy had given them a new birth, a birth unto hope which draws its life from the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (second reading). They learned what they had to do on all the Sundays following the resurrection. The first reading today informs us that they “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the communal life, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” We follow their example. We come together on Sunday as a local expression of the universal Church. We listen to the apostles’ teaching in the scripture readings of the day. We offer our prayers together, and we celebrate the breaking of the bread, the New Testament code word for the Holy Eucharist, which is the source of our communal life as children of one heavenly Father. Thus, today we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday which was proclaimed to the whole by Pope John Paul II. In honor of this event we want to offer sentences from John Paul’s first homily as pope, given on the day of his inauguration, October 22, 1978. “All of you who are still seeking God, all of you who already have the inestimable good fortune to believe, and also you who are tormented by doubt: Please listen once again, today in this sacred place, to the words uttered by Simon Peter: “Brothers and sisters, do not be afraid to welcome Christ and accept his power… Open wide the doors for Christ… Christ knows what is in man. He alone knows it. So often today man does not know what is within him, in the depths of his mind and heart. So often he is uncertain about the meaning of his life on this earth. He is assailed by doubt, a doubt which turns into despair. We ask you therefore, we beg you with humility and trust, let Christ speak to man. He alone has words of life, yes, of eternal life.” May John Paul’s words, his spirit, and his love for Jesus continue to inspire all of us! Happy Divine Mercy Sunday!
